If your boiler has not had a service since spring, autumn is the time to book one in. By the first cold snap in late October the engineer diary fills up — and a no-heating call-out at 7am in December is significantly less fun (and more expensive) than a £85 service in September.
What a proper service includes
A 10-minute “tick-and-flick” visit is not a service. A proper Gas Safe service includes: visual inspection of the casework, removing the front cover, checking the condition of the heat exchanger, fan, expansion vessel, electrical connections, condensate trap and flue. The engineer should also analyse the flue gases with a calibrated analyser and record the readings on the service record.
What you should expect to pay
£75–£110 for a standard combi service in Berkshire is the going rate. Anything below £60 usually means the engineer has 20 minutes booked on your job and is going to skip the strip-down. Anything over £130 should include a power-flush quote or some other extra work — ask before agreeing.
